House and Apartment

Three bedrooms, one story house with large caretaker apartment in the San Jose suburb of Bello Horizonte de Escazú, with 2,572 square meters of land (0.6 acres). House has approximately 460 square meters (5,000 square feet). You can see a beautiful view of the Central Valley from the large windows in both the big wood paneled living room and the very large lower living room. Click on the photographs for a larger view.

(Can't see the city lights because of the flash)

The lower living room has two wide sliding doors that open out onto the side garden patio so parties can spill out into the garden. The caretaker’s apartment has three rooms and a separate entrance; there is also a two car garage, a storage room and a garden storage room. All of the bedrooms have closets. There is a water tank big enough to bury a Volkswagen beetle underneath the front lawn. It is not expensive here to hire a gardener. The property is rectangular, with frontage on two roads. We have 89.5 meters road front, and the property is 94.65 meters deep. The view is protected since the property is deep.

NOTE: It's possible to divide this property into two lots since we have road frontage and entrances on two sides. One lot fronts onto the main road and contains the house and apartment and the other lot fronts onto the side road and is a building lot with a view.

We're moved partly to get the business out of the house and partly to move in with my mother-in-law.

Tropical Organic Garden

I’ve spent years improving the soil and collecting plants for this garden.
     Fruiting plants collection includes grapes, several kinds of bananas, blackberries, golden berries, pitahaya (night blooming cereus), edible philodendrons - and that's not including the fruit trees...
     Fragrant plants collection includes a bay rum tree, cinnamon tree, ylang ylang, two kinds of jasmine, incense plant, Queen of the night, lady of the night, butterfly ginger, many others.
     Herbs and spices include turmeric, ginger, lemon grass and galangal (for Thai cooking), gotu kola, comfrey, Russian tarragon, Stevia, chocolate mint, and many others.
     Flowering plants include heliconias, emperor’s scepter, grass orchids, many others.
     Fruit trees include walnut, cas, guava, peach, lemon, orange, kumquat, acerola, grapefruit, Barbados cherry, etc.
     Driveway gate operated by remote control.
     Large lawn - big enough for an outdoor party, croquet or volleyball game.
     Handmade stone wall along the street side; stone steps in the garden
This is a great place to garden – year round springtime weather. Very good for orchids too. This has always been an organic garden. Click on the photos for a larger view.

Custom Woodworking Details

Since Barry Biesanz has had this house for twenty years, he has installed a lot of custom woodwork. For example, the upper living room and the kitchen are both paneled from floor to ceiling in Amarillon wood; the kitchen cabinets are entirely made of solid Cristobal. The upper living room has a wood ceiling, floors, and walls. The bathroom and the master bedroom has cristobal closet doors. All three bedrooms have wood floors. Quiet Neighborhood

Average temperature in this area is 72 F - spring all year long!

     We are located five minutes outside the old colonial suburb of Escazú;
     15 minutes to the center of San José;
     It’s 35 minutes to the San José international airport;
     10 minutes to Saretto’s supermarket;
     2 minutes to the small grocery store;
     10 minutes to the English speaking K-12 school Country Day School;
     15 minutes to the large mall Multiplaza, members store PriceSmart and brand new hospital;
     The small bed and breakfast “Riscos de Guacamaya” is directly across the street;
     2 minutes to the Bello Horizonte Country Club (swimming pool, tennis courts);
     10 minutes to the Costa Rica Country Club (golf, tennis, bowling, 4 pools, squash, weight room).
This is a side street with little traffic and quiet neighbors. The water supply is good; it’s provides by the national ministry AyA, and in any case we have a very large water tank. The other houses in the neighborhood are generally on large lots and are at least as nice as this one. The house in front was owned by the notoriously rich Robert Vesco…
