Humidors

Back in the 80’s, a neighbor with retail contacts told me that Neiman marcus wanted a line of the finest possible humidors in solid precious woods. Price was no object. This was a delightful design challenge, and I set to work, going through three complete redesigns before finally feeling that there was nothing more I could add or remove. The humidors all had splined miters, and the larger sizes featured dovetail splines as well. A cove cut along the bottom edge gave the boxes a floating effect. The carcass was assembled with the top and panel tongued into place. The lines were clean and modern, the joinery the best possible. The wood, Cocobolo, one of the finest of the Rosewoods. The finish was hand applied shellac and wax, natural, non-toxic, ages well, and is easily touched up. The Interior of Spanish Cedar, left unfinished to absorb excess moisture. Adjustable dividers inside, and a removable tray. Handmade cocobolo hinges were the final touch, and I was happy!

Nieman Marcus never even looked at it, and in the end went with some cheap veneered designs, but at least I’d had the chance to come up with the best design I could, unfettered by thoughts of cost. And with practice, I’ve managed to keep the cost down as well! So buy one today, and be happy also – and if you like, I’ll throw in the recipe for the famous Neiman Marcus chocolate chip cookies!
